Embers is a community centred around women's participation in basketball, and is made up of people who mutually support, encourage and challenge on another on and off the basketball court.

We are driven by our mutual love for the game of basketball, our community, uplifting women, and our personal faith.

Why Be Part of Embers?
  1. Skill Development: Gain the opportunity to improve your basketball skills through regular team training sessions led by an experienced coach, no matter your skill level.

  2. Community Connection: Join a welcoming community that values teamwork, friendship, and support beyond just the game of basketball.

  3. Inclusive Environment: Be part of a diverse and inclusive club that encourages women of all ages (18-60+) and skill levels to participate.

Both competitions require you to attend a minimum of 50% of games to compete in the Finals series, however, we expect all our players to attend at least 60-70% of games.

Training Culture

At Embers, committing to training is an expectation—it’s how we build our game and grow as a team! We get that life happens, and sometimes you might need to miss a session here and there. But if you know you won’t be able to commit to regular training, it might be best to wait until the timing’s right. Being there for each other and growing together is a big part of what makes Embers.

Attendance at training also directly impacts your performance on the court and the overall team chemistry. Our coaches are committed to making sure everyone gets a fair amount of game time, but it can be challenging to plan and strategise effectively without your presence at training.

Missing sessions means you could miss out on key plays and drills, which might make it harder to find your rhythm during games. Consistency is key, and being part of training helps us build a stronger, more unified team!

Embers emerged from a group of women within a Christian-Catholic faith community, and this foundation continues to shape our culture. While faith is a significant part of our culture, Embers welcomes women of all beliefs, and all are valued members of our community.

Christian values of hope, integrity and forgiveness are at the heart of our culture, shaping how we play, connect, and support one another. These values inspire us to compete with integrity, foster genuine camaraderie, and strive for excellence both on and off the court.

Prayer Culture

Faith is expressed through short team prayers (<60 seconds) before and after games, promoting unity, humility, and gratitude. Players are invited to (but not required to) lead these prayers on a rotating basis, whether structured or spontaneous. During these moments, we ask all players to gather, demonstrating respect and reverence for one another, regardless of personal beliefs.

An example of a simple quick prayer might be:
God, we thank You for this opportunity to play.
Grant us the strength to do our best, keep everyone safe,
and let fairness and respect guide us today.
Amen.

Teamwork is a critical part of Embers culture and we encourage every member to contribute in different ways. Volunteer roles range from very little commitment to significant contribution.

Team Roles

Before the 5th game of the season, each team must have these roles filled:

  • Game-Ready Tools: Brings an 'emergency kit' with spare hair ties, a nail cutter and a spare water bottle for their teammates who may have forgotten

  • Prayer Roster Organiser: Organises who will pray before/after games and sends a reminder each week about who is rostered.

  • Team Captain: Reminds players of upcoming game times, sets up a Whatsapp poll for game attendance, provides a voice of encouragement and support to teammates. Captains work closely with the team coach to build up the team.

  • Stat Person (optional): This person uses the Glory League platform to add additional statistics to help players track their growth throughout the season.

There are plenty of other ways our players get involved, support and build up our community. We have volunteer teams who run our social media, manage our website, track our finances, organise fundraising initiatives and social gatherings. If you have personal or professional skills you'd like to offer in service, let's have a chat! Email: embersbasketball@gmail.com.
